What is the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?
TAE40122 is the current AQF Level 4 qualification that licences you to train and assess accredited VET courses in Australia. It sits inside the TAE Training and Education Training Package on training.gov.au and is the minimum credential every RTO trainer must hold under the Standards for RTOs 2025.
The qualification replaced TAE40116 on 23 December 2022. Any trainer delivering nationally recognised training after the industry transition period must hold TAE40122 or an equivalent approved qualification. The reason for the update was simple. ASQA, training.gov.au and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations wanted the package to better reflect the realities of modern delivery, workplace-based training, compliance and foundation skills.
Why does the TAE40122 qualification exist?
TAE40122 exists so every VET trainer in Australia meets a common, auditable standard of competence before facilitating a course. It confirms you can plan training, deliver it, assess it against national units, and work within the compliance framework that ASQA enforces. Without it, no RTO can legally list you as a trainer or assessor.
The qualification is more than a formality. It sets the baseline for how adults in your class are taught, how evidence is judged, and how learners are supported when English, literacy or numeracy is a challenge. Employers, RTOs and government funding bodies all use the TAE40122 as the check before they trust you with a cohort.
Who needs a Cert IV in Training and Assessment?
You need TAE40122 if you want to deliver any nationally recognised training in Australia. That covers trainers at TAFEs, private RTOs, industry-based RTOs, enterprise RTOs inside large employers, and anyone contracting to deliver a training product listed on training.gov.au. It also covers workplace assessors who sign off competency under a funded traineeship or apprenticeship.

TAE40122 is built from 6 core units and 6 elective units, with the electives chosen from a restricted list inside the training package. How long does TAE40122 take?
Time to complete depends entirely on the delivery mode you choose. The four-week face-to-face intensive at Cannon Hill gets compliant learners across the line in 20 teaching days plus a short post-course assessment window. The live virtual classroom runs eight weekends. The self-paced per-unit mode lets you take as long as you need, unit by unit, up to 12 months.
Most learners who choose the intensive mode finish inside six to eight weeks once you include the time to submit final portfolio evidence. Self-paced learners usually land somewhere between three and nine months, depending on how much time they can commit each week.
How much does TAE40122 cost in 2026?
Learn TAE prices the full TAE40122 at $2,799 for either the face-to-face Brisbane intensive or the live virtual classroom. Self-paced learners pay $350 per unit under our pay-as-you-go option, which works out to $4,200 for all 12 units. Our Express Trainer Mentoring pathway is $2,999. A $99 non-refundable enrolment fee applies to all modes.
These prices include all assessment, trainer support, your digital Statement of Attainment on each unit, and the final qualification. The four delivery modes compared
POD 1 for Learn TAE is that we offer four delivery modes where most RTOs offer one or two. Here is how they stack up.
Face-to-face intensive (Cannon Hill). Four weeks, Monday to Friday, in our Cannon Hill campus 12 minutes from Brisbane CBD. 20 live trainer-led class days, cohorts capped at 12. Live virtual classroom. Delivered live (not pre-recorded) through Zoom with breakout rooms for micro-practice. You still get a live trainer and a cohort, just from anywhere in Australia. Good for full-time workers outside south-east Queensland. See the virtual online page.

What are the TAE40122 entry requirements?
You must have vocational competency in the industry area you plan to train in, verifiable current industry experience, and the learner capacity to complete an AQF Level 4 qualification. There is no formal prerequisite qualification, but most learners bring either a Cert III, Diploma or equivalent industry experience documented in a detailed resume.
Vocational competency is the big one. ASQA expects your TAE40122 evidence to include delivery of real training in your vocation to real adult learners. That means you need access to a workplace, a gym, a classroom or any setting where adults can be trained. Can I complete TAE40122 online?
Yes. Learn TAE offers a fully online live virtual classroom and a self-paced online mode. Both are nationally recognised and produce the same qualification as the face-to-face course. The only component you cannot do purely online is the vocational delivery evidence, because ASQA requires you to facilitate training with real adult learners at some point during the qualification.
Do I need a qualification before enrolling in TAE40122?

Trainers already holding TAE40116 need to complete the updated units through a gap-training pathway to upgrade.
Will my TAE40122 qualification expire?
The qualification itself does not expire. However, if the training package is superseded and your RTO scope moves to the new code, you may need gap training to keep delivering nationally recognised training. That is exactly what happened with TAE40116 holders who needed to upgrade to TAE40122.
