If you have been delivering training or assessment work already, you may not need to study every unit of TAE40122 from scratch. Recognition of Prior Learning -RPL for Cert IV in Training and Assessment lets you submit evidence of your existing skills and gain the same nationally recognised qualification. This guide explains how RPL works, what evidence counts, and the realistic timeline for an experienced trainer.
What is RPL for Cert IV in Training and Assessment?
RPL for Cert IV in Training and Assessment is a formal process where Learn TAE assesses your existing skills, knowledge and experience against the TAE40122 units. If your evidence matches the unit requirements, you are assessed competent without repeating the formal study. RPL produces the same Statement of Attainment and final qualification as full delivery.
RPL is defined in the Standards for RTOs 2025 as the recognition of any previous study, work experience and life experience that demonstrates the required competency. It is not a shortcut. The evidence bar is the same as classroom assessment, and in some cases higher because you are proving competency without the guided support of a course.
Who is RPL for Cert IV in Training and Assessment suitable for?
RPL suits experienced trainers, assessors, mentors and workplace facilitators who have been doing the work but never held the qualification. Common candidates include internal L&D leads who have designed and delivered corporate training for years, industry experts who have mentored apprentices, safety officers who have run compliance briefings, and teachers transitioning to VET from schools.
RPL is not suitable for absolute beginners. If you have never delivered training, facilitated a session, or designed an assessment tool, you will struggle to produce evidence for units like TAEDEL411 Facilitate vocational training or TAEASS412 Assess competence. Those units demand real delivery and assessment evidence that only comes from practice.
What evidence do you need for TAE40122 RPL?
RPL evidence must be sufficient, valid, authentic and current. Typical evidence includes training session plans, delivered session recordings or observations, assessment tools you have designed, marked assessment samples with learner names redacted, learner feedback, validation meeting notes, and professional development records.
Learn TAE provides an evidence guide for each unit that maps the required evidence to real workplace artefacts. You then gather, upload and cross-reference your evidence in our learner portal. For units where documented evidence is thin, we offer a short live supplementary assessment such as a one-hour facilitation observation or a 30-minute competency conversation. See the RPL page for the full evidence checklist.
How does the RPL process work at Learn TAE?
The Learn TAE RPL process has five steps. First, a free credential audit where we review your CV, qualifications and work history. Second, a formal RPL enrolment with evidence plan. Third, evidence gathering and upload through the learner portal. Fourth, assessor review and any supplementary assessment required. Fifth, issue of Statements of Attainment and the final qualification.
The free audit is a 30-minute conversation where a senior trainer looks at what you have and tells you how much of TAE40122 is realistically RPL-able. Some candidates RPL the entire qualification. Others RPL half and complete the other half through short-form delivery. A small number find full delivery is faster than RPL, given the evidence work involved. Honesty in the audit saves everyone time.
How long does TAE40122 RPL take?
Most Learn TAE RPL candidates complete the full qualification in four to ten weeks from enrolment. The pace depends entirely on how quickly you can gather your evidence. Some candidates have their portfolios ready in a week. Others take three months because they are still gathering fresh evidence alongside current work.
Evidence gathering is almost always the bottleneck. If you already have digital training records and can copy-paste into the learner portal, you move fast. If your evidence lives in old paper files, an old employer’s LMS you no longer access, or your memory, you will slow down. Plan for the evidence gathering to take two to three weeks even if your actual work history is extensive.
How much does TAE40122 RPL cost?
Learn TAE prices full RPL at $1,800 to $2,400 depending on the volume of supplementary assessment required. That compares to $2,799 for full face-to-face delivery. Partial RPL is priced per unit if you want to mix recognition with short-form delivery. Full pricing is on the pricing page.
The price includes the evidence guide, your RPL portfolio template, all assessor review and feedback, supplementary assessment if required, and the reissue of your full qualification. Additional fees only apply if you need extensive supplementary assessment because your evidence base is thinner than initial audit suggested. The credential audit is always free.
What units can you RPL in TAE40122?
All 12 units are theoretically RPL-able if you have the evidence. In practice, some units are much easier to RPL than others. Units with strong written artefacts (assessment tools, session plans, training package interpretation) RPL fastest. Units that require live observation (facilitation of a training session, assessment of competence in a workplace) require either recent recorded evidence or supplementary live assessment.
The most commonly RPL-ed units at Learn TAE are TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products, TAEDES412 Design and develop plans for vocational training, TAEPDD401 Work effectively in the VET Sector, and TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation. These units have strong documentary evidence trails. The facilitation units (TAEDEL411, TAEDEL412) more often include a live observation component.
What happens if some of your evidence doesn't meet the standard?
If part of your evidence is not sufficient, not current or not authentic, your assessor issues a “request for further evidence” with specific gaps identified. You then submit additional evidence, request a supplementary live assessment, or elect to complete short-form delivery for that specific unit. You are not penalised for gaps, just directed to close them.
Most RPL candidates hit at least one “request for further evidence” on at least one unit. That is the system working as designed. Rather than passing unqualified candidates, the assessor ensures the rules of evidence are met. Learn TAE’s 30-day post-completion support window gives you time to respond without extra fees.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I RPL Cert IV in Training and Assessment without any training experience?
No. You need demonstrable prior experience in training, assessment, facilitation or a closely related field. Without that, the rules of evidence cannot be met through RPL and formal delivery is the appropriate pathway.
What if my training experience was a long time ago?
Evidence must be current, usually defined as within the last three to five years. If your experience is older than that, you will need to supplement with recent professional development, refresher activities or current observations. The credential audit will tell you how much current evidence you need.
Is RPL easier than completing the course?
Not necessarily. RPL trades guided study for evidence gathering. Some learners find it faster because they already have the artefacts. Others find it slower because organising and mapping evidence takes as long as fresh delivery. The honest answer depends on how organised your existing work records are.
Can international training experience count as RPL evidence?
Yes, if it is documented, current and relevant to Australian VET practice. The assessor will need enough detail to verify authenticity and competence. Some overseas contexts translate easily (corporate L&D, international training providers). Others require supplementary evidence aligned to the Australian framework.
Do I need to be working right now to do RPL?
Ideally yes, because recent evidence strengthens your portfolio. Candidates not currently working can still RPL if they have recent past evidence plus current professional development. Candidates out of the sector for more than five years usually benefit from short-form delivery in some units.
