TAE40122 vs TAE40116: What Changed & Do You Need to Upgrade?

TAE40122 vs TAE40116

TAE40116 was superseded by TAE40122 when ASQA released Version 5 of the TAE Training Package on 13 January 2023. The extended transition period for RTOs to issue new TAE40116 certificates closed on 9 December 2024. If you hold TAE40116, you probably want to know what changed, whether your qualification still works, and whether you need to upgrade. Quick answer: TAE40116 is still nationally recognised, but every new enrolment now runs on TAE40122. This guide covers the real differences and the upgrade pathway through Learn TAE (RTO #40407).

TAE40122 vs TAE40116: key differences

The main differences are a larger total unit count, a rebalanced core and elective split, a brand new compulsory professional-practice core unit, tighter assessment expectations, and digital skills embedded throughout. TAE40122 has 12 units (6 core, 6 elective). TAE40116 had 10 units (9 core, 1 elective). The qualification outcome is equivalent at AQF Level 4, but TAE40122 is the current standard recognised across Australia.

Both qualifications are nationally recognised. TAE40116 has not expired for existing holders. The practical reality is that every newly enrolling learner and every new scope application now runs on TAE40122.

What actually changed

The six core units in TAE40122 (as delivered by Learn TAE):

  • TAEPDD401 Work effectively in the VET sector (the brand new core unit that did not exist in TAE40116). Focuses on professional practice, ethics, and staying current in the VET sector.
  • TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs
  • TAEDES412 Design and develop plans for vocational training
  • TAEDEL411 Facilitate vocational training
  • TAEASS412 Assess competence
  • TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation

The six electives Learn TAE has packaged into TAE40122:

  • TAELLN422 Use foundation skills resources, strategies and advice
  • TAEDEL405 Plan, organise and facilitate online learning
  • TAEASS404 Assess competence in an online environment
  • TAEDEL412 Facilitate workplace based training
  • TAEDEL311 Provide work instruction
  • BSBHRM413 Support the learning and development of teams and individuals

Cluster structure at Learn TAE

Our 12 units are grouped into four named clusters so you build skills in a logical order. Each cluster can be enrolled in separately under our Self-Paced delivery mode at $749 per cluster.

  • Cluster 1: VET Launchpad
Your starting point. Intro to the VET sector, trainer roles and responsibilities, key compliance basics, identifying learner needs, and supporting student success.
  • Cluster 2: Design2Deliver
Core assessor skills, interpreting training packages, designing compliant assessments, conducting fair assessments, and participating in validation processes.
  • Cluster 3: Virtually Ready
Online training and assessment skills, planning and delivering digital sessions, managing virtual learner engagement, and adapting assessments for online delivery.
  • Cluster 4: Lead the Learning
Designing complete training plans, delivering group or one-on-one sessions, refining presentation and facilitation skills, and leading with impact in vocational settings.

What strengthened in TAE40122:

  • New core unit TAEPDD401 for VET sector professional practice
  • Digital skills woven through almost every unit, not just the online-learning electives
  • Tighter assessment requirements: oral presentations must be face-to-face, and virtual candidates need access to real adult learners for their training sessions
  • Foundation skills integration formalised through TAELLN422

What stayed the same:

  • AQF Level 4 qualification outcome
  • Core skillset of designing, delivering, and assessing
  • Nationally recognised status
  • Use as the baseline trainer credential across Australia

Is TAE40116 still valid?

  • Yes. TAE40116 issued before supersession remains nationally recognised. Holders can continue working as trainers. There is no mandatory upgrade requirement imposed by ASQA.

    Where TAE40116 is still fine:

    • Existing trainer roles where your employer has no preference
    • Enterprise trainer positions in non-RTO contexts
    • Senior trainers with strong track records
    • Trainers not planning to move RTOs

Where TAE40116 can be a problem:

    • Applying to new RTOs that require current TAE40122 specifically
    • Scope applications where TAE40122 is now expected
    • Freelance contracts with clients who ask for a current credential
    • Tender applications where TAE40122 is a scoring criterion

Most Learn TAE upgrade learners come from this second group.

The upgrade pathway at Learn TAE

Learn TAE delivers TAE40122 through four flexible delivery modes, which means your upgrade from TAE40116 is priced to how much study you actually need.

How an upgrade typically works:

  1. Free eligibility call. We review your existing TAE40116 units and identify what maps across.
  2. RPL where possible. Recognition of Prior Learning credits your existing competency so you don’t redo what you already know.
  3. Gap training on new content. This almost always includes the new core TAEPDD401 (Work effectively in the VET sector), plus any updated assessment or online-delivery units you still need to cover.
  4. Assessment submission and validation. Your assessor reviews your portfolio and conducts oral questioning.
  5. TAE40122 issued. Once your units are signed off, you receive the full TAE40122 qualification.

Cost at Learn TAE. Pricing is published on the course overview page:

Because most upgrades are only a handful of units, pay-per-unit at $350 is usually the most cost-effective route. Self-paced cluster study at $749 works if you’re covering a full block (for example, Cluster 1: VET Launchpad if you need TAEPDD401 and the VET sector foundations).

Timeline. Our full course runs over 4 weeks face-to-face plus self-paced online learning and assessments, with learners given up to 12 months to complete. An upgrade is typically 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how many units you need and the delivery mode you choose.

Should you upgrade?

Upgrade if:

  • You’re applying for roles at private RTOs
  • Your employer has flagged a preference for TAE40122
  • You’re looking to freelance and want a current credential
  • You want to future-proof against further VET changes
  • You’re an RTO compliance manager and need a current credential for audit

Stay on TAE40116 if:

  • You’re settled in a role that accepts TAE40116
  • You plan to retire within 2 to 3 years
  • You’re focused on a specific enterprise trainer position without preference

The cost of staying on TAE40116 is optionality. Upgrading preserves options for future moves.

Vs doing the full TAE40122

Some trainers consider redoing the full qualification instead of upgrading.

When a full course makes sense:

  • You want cohort experience and networking
  • Your TAE40116 is very dated (completed 8+ years ago) and you want a full refresher
  • You want to experience the current version end to end
  • Your employer specifically wants evidence of full-course completion

When an upgrade makes sense:

  • You’re active in training currently and just need a credential update
  • You’ve kept up with VET developments through CPD
  • Budget is tighter
  • Time is tighter

Most Learn TAE upgrade learners go with the pay-per-unit or self-paced cluster pathway rather than redoing the full qualification.

Employer recognition

Government and TAFE. Both TAE40116 and TAE40122 recognised. Some state TAFEs are transitioning to prefer TAE40122 for new hires.

Private RTOs. Preferences vary. Larger RTOs increasingly specify TAE40122. Smaller or specialist RTOs often accept TAE40116.

Corporate L&D. Recognition depends on the employer’s policy. Many don’t distinguish; some do.

ASQA audit context. RTOs under audit must demonstrate their trainers hold current qualifications. TAE40116 is not automatically disqualifying, but it’s easier to defend if the trainer also has relevant CPD.

Freelance and contract. Client preference varies. Progressive clients want TAE40122; others don’t specify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TAE40116 expired?

No. Existing TAE40116 qualifications remain nationally recognised.

No mandatory upgrade. A practical upgrade is recommended if you’re applying for new roles or tenders.

4 weeks at Learn TAE, depending on how many units you need and whether you choose pay-per-unit, self-paced cluster, or blended virtual classroom delivery. The full course runs 4 weeks face-to-face plus online learning and assessments, with learners given up to 12 months to complete.

Pay-per-unit at $350 per unit is usually cheapest if you only need a handful of units. Self-paced cluster at $749 per cluster fits if you need a full block. The full fresh qualification is $2,799 upfront face-to-face or virtual, plus the $99 non-refundable enrolment fee.

You receive the full TAE40122 qualification after completing the required upgraded units.

Keep both records. Some employers accept either. A combined record strengthens your portfolio.

Still recognised. A 10-year-old TAE40116 without recent CPD may raise employer questions. Upgrading refreshes currency.

Likely, eventually. Training packages update every 5 to 7 years. TAE40122 is current as of 2026 and expected to remain so for several more years.
